I now realize how naive I’d been until recently.
Since I started the blog, I’ve always seen the various comment spam modules for WordPress, Typepad and others, and read about other people’s ordeals in the “old days”. I just strangely assumed that it was something that seeped in like typical mailbox spam.
Recently, I’ve finally seen just what all of the discussion is about. As of about a week ago, my blog seems to have finally made it onto the radar of spammers. On a daily basis, I’ve been getting anywhere from 20-80 comments submitted. The text is completely random, and they are from different, possibly random, source IP addresses (I need to look at this more closely).
What I find the most amusing is the content. The comments are all written to look legit, such as “I just found your blog…bla…bla…”. On top of that, there are some 3-5 URLs in each. Most of the URLs are links to major media sites. This can be news sites such as CNN, or web pages of popular movies. I’m actually thinking of retrieving the URLs to make a rather comprehensive media URL list. Only one of the links is the typical junk. Is this normal of comment spam, or just the actions of one spammer? I think I’ll do a bit of reading over the next week to try to find out just how typical this is.
The only conclusion I can draw so far is that the content is so useless, I don’t see how it benefits the spammers. It seems to be completely designed as a nuisance.
