Road Tragedy

I was driving back to the base from a meeting at my office today when traffic came to a standstill.  After a few moments, I passed a police car blocking 2 of the 3 lanes on highway 5 Eastbound and saw a figure lying on the ground beyond it.  Seeing that nobody was close to the figure, I didn’t know what the situation was so I pulled over to see if anyone needed help.

As I approached the figure, I saw a man lying on his stomach, looking in rather rough shape.  I asked the cop who was standing by his car rather nonchalontly if the guy was dead, and he told me to go check.  It’s worth nothing that unlike North America where all police must undergo First Responder training, the police here do not undergo anything.  By blocking traffic, he had done his job and was now waiting for “someone” to come and deal with the victim.  I wonder how many lives could be saved if all emergency services were trained at least to a First Responder level.

It was a case of a pedestrian vs car on a major highway (meaning there should be no pedestrians).  About the time I was deciding I couldn’t find a corrotid pulse, a doctor arrived and along with a few bystanders, we flipped him.  Magen David Adom soon arrived in a mobile ICU with a doctor and paramedic.  They intubated him and hooked up a monitor, but he was gone.

There are some signs that indicate that it may have been intentional.  The car that hit him contained some young girls who suffered minor cuts from broken glass.  They also suffered some emotional trauma when someone decided that the best place to examine their cuts was in the ambulance parked next to a dead body, giving them a clear sight of the victim.

It’s too bad innocent bystanders had to suffer if the investigation turns out that this was an intentional death.
